Rounding Up and Out With the Men

image

My last post for Toro Magazine offered a few tips for turning a bachelor pad into a  female-friendly environment, sans Batman sheets and Transformer figurines. Read up on Part 3.

Part Two for the Gents

image

Here is Part 2 of my series for Toro Magazine - learning how to cross over from the virtual world to reality on the first date. And speaking of two people I’d love to bring into my reality, I give you Damon & Clooney. Something tells me these guys have never needed dating advice of any kind.

This One's For The Boys

image

Recently I wrote a three-part series for Toro Magazine, an online men’s magazine that covers style, entertainment, fashion, food and culture, among other topics. My series was designed to help guys navigate today’s dating world, from teaching them how to set up an online profile, to planning a first date, and finally, giving their bachelor pad a once over to welcome the fairer sex.

This week I’ll post links to the three articles (starting with Part 1), so if you, or anyone you know could use a few tips, feel free to pass these links along. Think of it as a public service for women everywhere who might be spared another introduction to her date’s action figure collection. Trust me, it’s happened.

As a total sidenote, I was looking for a main image for this post and do you know what comes up if you do a search for “hot men” in Google images? My virgin eyes!! Let’s just say it’s not safe for work. So instead I found this on Piccsy. It’s kinda random but it made me laugh, so let’s just go with it.

Put On Your Thinking Cap

Oooooohhhhweeeeee! I love a good brain teaser. Even better when it’s entertainment and pop-culture related. Check out these minimalist TV posters by re:design, each representing a different show. There are 15 in total (that’s 3 x 5 for anyone who’s keeping track). See how many you can get right, but if you get stumped you can get the full lineup of answers on the the designers’ blog.

This Tumblr Blog Strikes the Right Note

Part of my job is scouring the internet for the creative inspiration - things that will spark a concept or an idea for a new project, a new post or just a new way of thinking about an old problem. (Did I mention I ♥ my job?) These days there is no shortage of places to look. Using Pinterest, Twitter links, Facebook posts, news feeds, or any number of blogs, you can find hidden gems almost anywhere, but it’s a bonus when you come across a site that aggregates the overwhelming amount of internet “stuff”, as is the case with A Note on Design.

This blog from DISC Interiors (which appears to be an LA-based interior design company), posts a seemingly endless feed of beautiful images – mostly of places I want to live, but also of the occasional fabulous fashion item or inspiring quote. I could explore it for hours, but I have serious “work” to get to ;)

A Hip Hop Royal Crib

You might remember an Ro3 post back in the Fall when Jenna Lyons (J.Crew Creative Director and President, and one of my favourite style crushes) put her Park Slope townhouse up for sale. I was practically drooling looking at the pics of what quickly became my dream house.

Not in quite the same vein, but interesting no less, is this SoHo penthouse, home to Alicia Keys and her hip-hop hubby, Swizz Beatz. I can’t say I’m quite as enamoured with the decor style, but to each their own. I’d never turn down 6000 sq. ft. in the middle of SoHo, would you?

Changing Lifestyles : Numero Trois

image

In the final post in Changing Lifestyles, mega-talented blogger Garance Doré discusses her culinary rules (Every breakfast has to consist of toast with butter. Real salted butter. And honey, of course; Life is not worth living without a glass of wine and 12 cups of coffee a day; and my favourite, Every meal has to finish with something sweet, otherwise it’s not a real meal, and therefore not real life.) and her journey back to feeling comfortable with her body. It’s a story we can all benefit from hearing, as we struggle to find that same acceptance within ourselves.

Changing Lifestyles : Numero Deux

image

In Changing Lifestyle Part 2, Garance Doré talks about her breakdown in an Australian hotel room, her failed attempts to contact her shrink across the globe, and a conversation chock full of tears with her boyfriend, The Sartorialist’s Scott Schuman, when she realizes her preoccupation with diet and food has become an obsession. Heartfelt, sincere and beautifully honest, this post reminds us to accept ourselves as we are and stop beating ourselves up over things we cannot change.

Changing Lifestyles : Numero Un

image

Garance Doré and her other half, The Sartorialist’s Scott Schuman, make up one of the blogospheres power couples. Where Schuman’s blog is an homage to street fashion and sartorial flair, Doré’s leans more toward an open diary of things that make her think, things that inspire her, or things that just make her laugh.

One series I found particularly fascinating was Changing Lifestyle, a three-part series where Doré described the shifts in perspective she experienced as a native Parisian moving to New York City, particularly with respect to food and diet. This week I’ll post links to all three pieces. Up first, New York skinny vs. Paris skinny. Let’s get schooled.

Bieber Plays Fast + Loose With The English Language

image

As a writer, a music-lover, and, just generally, a human being, I take offense to the lyrics to the newest Justin Bieber song, “Boyfriend”. THIS ISN’T EVEN ENGLISH PEOPLE! What does “I am ‘ma a make you shine bright” even mean??? “Swaggie”?? is that even a word?? Is this a sign that I’m getting old? When I hear a song on the radio and think, “What is all this newfangled lingo the young kids are using these days? And where did I put my Ovaltine?” Oh lordy, times are tough.

Listen to Boyfriend here and check out all the ridonculous lyrics below.

[Verse 1]
If I was your boyfriend, I’d never let you go
I can take you places you ain’t never been before
Baby take a chance or you’ll never ever know
I got something in my pants that I’d really like you to blow
Swag swag swag, on you
Chilling by the fire whilst we are eating your poo
I don’t know about me but I know about you
So say hello to bieberconda in three two

[Pre Hook]
I’d like to be everything you want
Hey girl, let me pleasure you

[Hook]
If I was your boyfriend, never let you go
Keep you on my d*ck girl, you’d never be alone
I can be a german, anywhere you want
If I was your boyfriend, I’d never let you go, I’d never let you go

[Verse 2]
Tell me what you like yeah tell me what you don’t
I could be your Buzz Lightyear fly across the globe
I don’t never wanna fight yeah, you already know
I am ‘ma a make you shine bright like you’re laying in the snow
Burr
Girlfriend, girlfriend, you could be my girlfriend
You could be my girlfriend until the —— world ends
Make you dance do a spin and a twirl and
Voice goin crazy on this hook like a whirl wind
Maggie

[Pre Hook]
I’d like to be everything you want
Hey girl, let me talk to you

[Hook]
If I was your boyfriend, never let you go
Keep you on my arm girl you’d never be alone
I can be a german, anywhere you want
If I was your boyfriend, I’d never let you go, I’d never let you go

[Bridge]
So give me a chance, ‘cause you’re all I need girl
Spend a week wit your boy I’ll be calling you my girlfriend
If I was your man, I’d never leave you girl
I just want to love you, and treat you right

[Hook]
If I was your boyfriend, never let you go
Keep you on my arm girl you’d never be alone
I can be a german, anywhere you want
If I was your boyfriend, I’d never let you go, never let you go

Na na na, na na na, na na na
Ya girl
Na na na na na na na na na na na na na,
Na na na na na na na na na na na na na,
I’m no beauty queen,
I’m just beautiful me
